The Department of Visual Communication Design & Applied Arts at Bolgatanga Technical University is a newly established academic unit dedicated to nurturing creativity, innovation, and technical competence in the visual and applied arts disciplines. The Department builds upon the strong foundation of the existing Industrial Art programme, providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in today’s dynamic commercial art industry.
The department comprises three specialized sections:
- Graphics/Communication Design: focuses on visual communication, advertising, branding, digital design, typography, photography, illustration, drone piloting and multimedia production.
- Painting and Decorating: focuses on artistic expression, colour theory, surface design, mural painting, and interior and exterior decorative techniques.
- Ceramic Art Design: explores the science and artistry of clay, including pottery, ceramic design, glazing, ceramic ornament decorations, landscaping and production techniques that merge tradition with innovation.
The Department offers a range of academic programmes, including the Bachelor of Technology (BTech), Higher National Diploma (HND), and Diploma levels. Each programme integrates practical studio work with theoretical foundations to develop students’ artistic creativity, design thinking, and entrepreneurial abilities.
The Department of Visual Communication Design & Applied Arts aims to produce graduates who are not only technically skilled but also capable of responding to global design trends and contributing meaningfully to Ghana’s creative economy. Through industry partnerships, research, and community-based projects, the department fosters innovation that bridges art, technology, and culture.
The department currently offers the following programmes.
- 4-year Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Communication/Graphic
- 4-year Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Fashion Design and Textiles
- 4-year Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Sculpture
- 4-year Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Painting and Decorating
- 3 year Higher National Diploma in Industrial Art in seven specialized options as in above.
- 2-year Diploma in garment making
- 2-year Diploma in Graphic Design
- 2-year Diploma in Furniture Design
- Proficiency 1 & 2 certificates in Garment making
- National Certificate 1 & 2 certificates (Ghana Jobs and Apprenticeship programmes)
- Precision Quality (PQ) Training
Focus of respective programmes
The Communication/Graphic Design section places emphasis on visual communication, branding, digital media, and design software proficiency while the Fashion & Textiles section explores garment construction, textile design. Leatherwork section provides integration of textile and leather material manipulation. The Sculpture programme provides a robust foundation in three-dimensional design artistic expression in commemorative monuments and heritage sites while in Ceramics, focus is given to skills in domestic table ware, roofing and floor tiles production. With Painting & Decorating, the focus covers both interior and exterior branding of the built environment, physical planning and the automobile body works.

Mr. Harold Martin Awinzeligo
Lecturer
Harold Martin Awinzeligo is a Lecturer in the Department of Industrial Art (Communication/Graphic Design Section) with a rich academic and professional background in visual communication and curriculum development. He holds an MPhil in Communication Design, a BTech in Printing (Animation & Illustration Option), and an HND in Commercial Art (Graphic Design). His areas of expertise include Graphic Design, Photography & Videography, Educational Technology, Sustainable Design and Innovation, and Competency-Based Training (CBT) curriculum development in multimedia. Harold is committed to integrating practical skills with technology-driven teaching strategies to enhance student learning and creativity.
