Brief background of department

Welcome to the department of Liberal Studies. The Department of Liberal studies is one of many departments under the School of Applied Sciences and Arts, serving as a cross-disciplinary unit that provides foundational courses to students across all academic programs at the university. The department consist of dedicated and hardworking staff who serve all other departments by teaching general courses like, entrepreneurship, French, Communication Skills, African studies, Information and Communication Technology, Statistics and many other courses. The department is currently made up of 15 permanent staffs and 3 non-permanent staffs.

Mission

The Department of Liberal Studies is committed to providing interdisciplinary education that enhances critical thinking, communication skills, and entrepreneurial competencies across all academic programs. By offering foundational courses in Entrepreneurship, Communication Skills, African Studies, Statistics and ICT, we equip students with transferable skills essential for success and lifelong learning. Our dedicated staff fosters an inclusive and innovative learning environment, supporting the university’s broader mission of applied research, community professional engagement, and sustainable development

Vision

To cultivate agile-thinking professionals equipped with analytical, communicative, and interdisciplinary skills that transcend traditional academic boundaries. By fostering critical perspectives and innovative problem-solving, we empower students to adapt to diverse career fields and contribute meaningfully to societal and sustainable development in Ghana and beyond.

Goals and Objectives
  1. Enhance Interdisciplinary Learning: Provide foundational courses (e.g., Entrepreneurship, Communication Skills, African Studies, Statistics, and ICT) to students across all academic programs, fostering a well-rounded education.
  2. Develop Critical Thinking and Communication Skills: Equip students with analytical, expressive, and problem-solving skills to thrive in diverse professional fields.
  3. Promote Entrepreneurial Competencies: Strengthen career readiness through entrepreneurship education, as evidenced by research on its positive impact on student career development.
  4. Expand Academic Programs: Introduce specialized HND and degree programs in Liberal Studies to broaden departmental offerings and meet evolving educational demands.
  5. Support Research and Community Engagement: Contribute to applied research (e.g., gender policy, sustainability in tourism) and collaborate with industries to address regional challenges.
  6. Foster Cultural and Global Awareness: Through courses like African Studies and French, cultivate cultural sensitivity and prepare students for a globalized workforce.
  7. Align with BTU’s Core Values: Uphold institutional values such as innovation, equity, and sustainability in teaching and curriculum design.
